Utopia Preschool

We had a special guest reader, Geraldine, Nohea's mom who joined us during our morning group time to read "Iggy Peck, Architect" by Andrea Beaty. The story is about a boy named Iggy who LOVES to build using all kinds of materials and lets his imagination lead the way. It was easy to see how much our preschoolers are just like Iggy. Everyday in the classroom, the children use a variety of materials to build their own structures whether it's blocks, magna-tiles, recycled materials, or geometric shaped connectors. Their ideas, creativity and imagination shine through in the ways they design, explore and bring their visions to life. After the story, the children became little architects themsleves using large and small marshmallows and toothpicks. It was so fun to see them experiment with shapes, balance and design. As we highlighted Zaha Hadid for Women's History Month, the children explored building, design and creativity bringing their ideas to life through thoughtful play and imagination. Whether they were working together, side by side, or on individual projects, we were seeing the children naturally invite others into their space, welcoming peers to join, share ideas and be a part of what they're creating. These special moments allow opportunities for connection, communication and growth. During their meaningful conversations, they listen to one another and talk through what they are building. This supports and helps the children how to be supportive and accepting for different ideas and learn that everyone's contribution matters. Whether building, playing, or working independently or together, we grow through connection and develop a strong sense of community.

The children enjoyed listening to "How to Say Hello to a Worm" by Kari Percival read by Aiden's mom, Felise. The book talked about how worms and other tiny helpers play an important role in keeping soil healthy so plants can grow. Afterwards Felise assisted the children in planting cilantro and snap pea seeds into their own pot and discussed how to care for plants by giving them sunlight, water, and gentle care. The children also had fun decorating their pots with stickers, making their planting project personal and special. They couldn't wait to take their plants home to watch them grow.

Last week, the children enjoyed Mix-Up Day, a special time when the children had the opportunity to spend part of their day with a different group. Mix-Up Day gives children a chance to build new friendships and connect with classmates they may not usually spend time with during the day. Exploring a new group helps children practice important social skills such as introducing themselves, sharing materials, taking turns, and learning how to be a friend in a new situation. It also encourages confidence and flexibility as they experience different routines and peers. These opportunities are really hepful for children who will soon be transitioning to TK or Kindergarten, as they practice meeting new friends, building connections and feeling comfortable in new environments. It was wonderful to see the children interacting with new friends, forming connections, and enjoying their time together.
